Els De Laet

During my glass art studies at the Academy of Berchem, I discovered lampworking, the shaping of hot glass in an open flame, as "my" technique. Hot glass fascinates me, and lampworking allows me to be in close contact with the material. Shaping hot glass requires a great deal of skill, concentration and control, making the process almost meditative.
Repetition and movement, sometimes literally, are present in all my work. The human figure also runs as a red thread through it. I am inviting the viewer to interact with my work, allowing him to play an active role wherever possible. Ultimately, the glass plays the main part: the
material's uniqueness, its transparency, and its "liquid hardness" all contribute to defining the unique character of the work.
